Dr. Patel was born and raised in the New York City metropolitan area. He completed his undergraduate education at Boston College, graduating magna cum laude in 1999. Following a successful career in corporate finance, his growing interest in the relationship between the brain and body led him to pursue a new career in medicine.
Dr. Patel completed his medical education at the State University of New York in New York City. He completed his psychiatric training at the University of Texas Medical Branch in 2015, serving as Chief Resident during his final year, also receiving the Outstanding Psychiatric Resident Award and the Robert B. White Award For Clinical Excellence during his tenure.
Dr. Patel joined medical staff at Montana State Hospital in 2015 and was appointed President of Medical Staff in 2016. For a number of years, he has also served as Medical Director of Turning Winds Academic Institute in Yaak, MT, a residential treatment program serving the psychiatric needs of adolescent students.
From 2017-2021, Dr. Patel transitioned to independent practice in a range of shorter-term assignments in both Texas and Montana including at Rock Prairie Behavioral Health hospital in College Station TX as Medical Director, North Texas State Hospital, the University of Texas Medical Branch and Montana State Hospital.
Since 2021, he works exclusively serving veterans with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Florida.
Dr. Patel is licensed to practice medicine in Florida and Texas. He is double board certified in General Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. He has been a member of the American Psychiatric Association and affiliated state organizations, serving on a number of committees in the past.
